Going in dumb
The most useful thing you can do before a hard conversation is tell people how to talk to you. Walk in as the expert and you get the expert-facing answer. Walk in as someone who doesn't know, and the room starts telling you the truth.
Everyone nodded. Nobody actually understood.
The meeting felt good. Heads nodded, energy was high, and everyone walked out aligned. Nobody agreed on what they were aligned on. Vague language isn't a communication problem, it's a thinking problem, and it moves downstream fast.
Nobody canceled the culture. They just stopped protecting it.
Culture doesn't get canceled. It gets outpaced. Through acquisitions, new markets, and organizations folded together before anyone asked what was worth carrying forward. The informal infrastructure that made the work feel like something rarely makes it into the plan.
Turns out the answer was already in the building.
The people closest to your biggest problems already know what's broken. They're not hard to find. They're just not usually in the room where things get decided.
Culture isn't built at the offsite. It's built at the offer letter.
